Get to know John Weir
For the past 23 years, John Weir has helped players achieve performance and personal breakthroughs through the power of the mind. John is the creator of the Mental Golf Type® program, the author of "Golfer’s Guide to Mental Fitness," and co-founder of Mental Golf Type LLC which provides mental performance coaching to golfers worldwide.
John's diverse educational background includes psychology alumnus from Point Park University, NLP Master Practitioner, and board certified hypnotist/instructor through the National Guild of Hypnotists.
Early on in his career, John's focus was solely on understanding the subconscious mind and it's role in performance. His golf hypnosis certification course has been offered to coaches and hypnotists in 60 countries around the world.
John is a recognized authority in the hypnosis profession. He had his own column in the Journal of Hypnotist (professional trade journal) for many years and was the recipient of numerous awards including:
- National Guild of Hypnotists Charles Tebbetts Award
- National Guild of Hypnotists Ormond McGill Award (faculty member of the year)
- National Guild of Hypnotists Order of Braid (highest honor given for lifetime achievement)
- John was the youngest in NGH history to receive this honor
The second half of his career has been devoted to the research, development, and implementation of Mental Golf Type.
As a mental coach, John has worked with countless players from all parts of the globe. He spent 5 years at the Mike Bender Golf Academy working with their elite players. John is the mental coach for Seminole State College Women's Golf Team. SSC has won five NJCAA National Championships since John's involvement with the program. He has also helped many other programs including Concordia University, a NCAA DIII program, win their first Conference Championship (2016).
Throughout the years, John’s work has been featured in many media forums including TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, and podcasts. Some notable features include ESPN Radio, FOX Sports, and Golf Talk Live. John had a feature article in Golfer Mag (a Scottish publication) as well as a contributor to a mental game article in the Golf Magazine October 2014 issue. John was a keynote speaker at the 2015 San Diego Golf Fest, and a speaker for the Proponent Group at the 2016 PGA Trade Show. In 2023, John spoke at the LPGA Virtual Summit during the PGA Show as well as delivered a partner presentation at the 2023 Proponent Group Summit. Recently, John was a presenter for the Proponent Group at the 2024 PGA Show.
John also understands the pressures of tournament golf through years of first hand experience as a caddy. John was on the bag for a Top 10 finish at the Puerto Rico Open, caddied at the U.S. Open, and the Honda Classic. John has also been on the bag at Q-Schools for Web.com Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour and Mena Tour. He still currently caddies full-time for Austen Truslow. Cheer them on!
Lately, John has been focused on the certification side of Mental Golf Type and training coaches around the world. Mental Golf Type is now Approved Educational Partners of the LPGA Professionals as well as a provider of continuing education units to PGA of America professionals.
